Celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019

Last week, The Citizen was delighted to receive a visit from MSP Sandra White, who joined us as we celebrated Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019. Eugene Gallanagh, Senior Director of Enabling Services from Skills Development Scotland was also in attendance.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019 promotes the benefits of apprenticeships and the value they bring to business and the economy in building Skills for the Future.

Sandra White spent the morning with our graduates, finding out what was involved with their training and presenting them with their certificates.

The Di Maggio’s Restaurant Group launched their Modern Apprenticeship Programme in 2017, welcoming an initial 35 employees who began a Hospitality apprenticeship, with the programme gradually extending to include further existing staff and new recruits as the business expanded.

We have had 78 graduates since its launch, and we currently have another 46 candidates working towards completion. Of our level 2 graduates, 9 gained promotion either during their course or shortly after completing and progressed straight onto the higher level leadership and management qualification. We are very excited to have just signed up another 10 managers at various levels who are going to help us to develop a new DRG Management Training program supporting the Level 3 Supervision and Leadership qualification.

Receiving their Modern Apprenticeship certificates were Sam Doyle and Calum McIntyre from The Citizen and Freya Craig from Bath St. Burger.

Also receiving recognition, were 4 of our General Managers who were presented their Investors In Young People certificates. IIYP is a framework of good practice that seeks to reward and recognise employers who have a track record in recruiting and training young people. The feedback from IIYP focused on the family feel of how each Manager runs their unit…the support their teams feel from their Managers and the opportunities they are given to learn and progress.

Last week, certificates were presented to Jenny Coulter (GM of The Anchor Line), Ross Wilson (GM of The Citizen), Konstantinos Simos (GM of Atlantic Brasserie) and Gregor Louden (GM of Bath St. Burger).

Kathryn Knox, Recruitment and Training Manager at the DRG said: “We are committed to training and developing our young team members to be the Head Chefs and Managers of the future. Our vision is to recruit ambitious individuals with a strong desire to succeed and give them the right training to take both the company and their own careers forward.”
