Food trends come and go, but the plant-based movement doesn’t seem to be going anywhere except up!
Glasgow is the most vegan-friendly city in Scotland, and with the number of plant-based Brits up by 360% in the last 10 years, there’s never been a better time to test out a diet free from meat and dairy.
Right now, hundreds of thousands of people are taking part in Veganuary, swerving meat and dairy for the month of January. Compare this to 5 years ago when it was launched, when just 3,300 took part. In fact, organisers of the initiative believe 2019 will be the year of the vegan.
What is a vegan diet?
A vegan, or plant-based diet is any diet that focuses around foods derived from plant sources. This can include fruit, vegetables, grains, pulses, legumes, nuts and meat substitutes such as soy products. People choose this way of eating for a variety of reasons including concern about the treatment of animals, health reasons, environmental concerns or simply personal taste.
Why do people go vegan?
One of the best motivators for people reducing their meat intake and transitioning to plant-based eating comes from how great they feel and how much more than can do in their lives once they’re feeling healthier. However, it can feel a bit daunting if you’ve never tried it before, and of course, no one is holding a gun to your head. So why not replace one, or better yet, two to three days of your week’s meals to vegetarian options?
A study carried out by Oxford University’s Department of Public Health found that eating meat no more than three times a week could prevent 31,000 deaths from heart disease, 9,000 deaths from cancer and 5,000 deaths from stroke, as well as save the NHS £1.2 billion in costs each year!
